This collaborative effort with the Ironwood State Prison located in Blythe, California aims to increase dog adoptability while creating space in our overcrowded kennels. This foster program provides meaningful connection for dogs and incarcerated men while preparing the dogs for adoption. Some skills dogs get to practice include walking on a leash, sleeping in a crate and learning manners. Dogs thrive in a structured environment with routine, and the caretakers are able to teach the dogs new manners while preparing them for their forever homes!

Ready to Adopt an Ironwood Dog?
Dogs in the Ironwood Dog Foster Program are adoption superstars! Thanks to the care and attention from their foster guardians, these dogs are more adapted to routine, and they are ready to thrive in a forever home.
These adoption ready dogs:
- Sleep in a crate
- Eat on a schedule
- Walk on a leash
- Show high levels of socialization
- Display great manners
If you are committed to adopting a dog currently in the program, please send an email to [email protected] with the subject line "Ironwood," and include a good contact phone number. Our staff will reach out via phone or email to answer any questions and explain the adoption process. Once you are ready to adopt, we will plan a meet-and-greet at the Ironwood State Prison located in Blythe, California. All adoptions will be processed on a first come, first served basis, and all dogs must be picked up by the adopter from the Ironwood State Prison facility at 19000 Wiley’s Well Road, Blythe, CA 92225. This process prepares the dog for success when leaving the facility, while saving kennel space for incoming dogs that continue to enter Riverside County shelters on a daily basis.

If you would like to support the dogs and caretakers in the program, you can donate items from their Amazon Wish List! Items will be sent directly to Ironwood State Prison. This list is managed by the Ironwood staff and changes based on their needs.
