I lost my pet. What should I do?

Do these things right away:
  1. Search the Petco Love Lost national lost and found database and Register your pet at www.petcolovelost.org. Pets that are brought into one of our shelters by a Good Samaritan are automatically uploaded as FOUND pets into Petco Love Lost.
  2. View the Petco Love Lost lost and found pets map below.
  3. Search the area where your pet was lost. Create LOST PET signs and hang them as you walk around the neighborhood.
  4. Visit nearby animal shelters to search for your lost pet. Come every couple of days because it can take a week or more for your pet to show up at a shelter.
  5. Ask for help. Ask friends, family, and neighbors to help you search the radius within a mile of your home. 80% of lost pets are found within a mile of where they live so your pet probably has not gone far!
  6. If your pet is licensed: Alert Docupet if the pet is licensed in Riverside County.
  7. If your pet is microchipped: Alert the company that microchipped the pet. If you aren’t sure, you can usually get this information by contacting the place where the pet was microchipped.

I found someone's lost pet. What should I do?

Don't wait! Do these things right away:
  1. Search the LOST listings on Petco Love Lost, the national lost and found database and Register the found pet at www.petcolovelost.org.
  2. Bring the pet to the nearest vet clinic or shelter to have the pet scanned for a microchip for free!  If there is one, owner info can be searched for by the clinic or shelter.
  3. Walk or drive around the area where you found the pet. Create FOUND pet signs you can hang in the area.
  4. Post the dog on social media platforms including your local Lost and Found Facebook page.
  5. Help get the pet home by holding them for at least 72 hours to give the owner time to locate them on Petco Love Lost. Most lost pets are less than a mile from their home and are more likely to get home if they remain in their neighborhood. If you’re in need of food or supplies while holding onto the found pet, please visit your nearest RCDAS location.
  6. Need help? If you have held the pet and not been able to find the owner, or if you are unable to hold the pet, you can bring the pet to the shelter during business hours. If you find a pet after business hours and the animal is sick, injured, or posing a threat to public safety,
    please call 951-358-PETS (7387)
