Black Saturday Adoption Special Returns

November 22, 2022

Adoption Fees Waived this Saturday at County Shelters

Riverside County Animal Services’ annual holiday adoption event – Black Saturday – returns this weekend with free adoptions all day at the county’s shelters in Jurupa Valley and Thousand Palms.

The adoptions begin at 10 a.m. Saturday and run through 4 p.m. at the Western Riverside County/City Animal Shelter in Jurupa Valley and the Coachella Valley Animal Campus in Thousand Palms.

All adoptions include the pet’s spay or neuter surgery, a microchip and vaccinations.

Although pets can be adopted for free, would-be adopters should be mindful that a dog license must be purchased if the adopter lives within the county’s jurisdictional areas. Dog license information/prices:

Black Saturday started 10 years ago as a new tradition to encourage bringing a shelter pet home for the holidays. It still remains as one of the more popular events Riverside County Animal Services puts on during the year, Assistant Director Kim Youngberg said.

“We know people love the Black Friday specials,” Youngberg said. “We don’t want to get in the way of the craziness of Black Friday. So after all that Friday frenzy, we’re here to say, why not visit one of our shelters and add a four- legged friend to the family and make the holidays that much more special?”

Youngberg said the shelters are especially full, something shelters across the country are experiencing. The Jurupa Valley shelter has more than 175 dogs and more than 230 cats. The Thousand Palms facility has more than 180 dogs and 36 cats.

“This year we are truly facing an overpopulation problem inside our shelters,” she said. “We really could use the help with Black Friday-like rush of adopters.”
