Browse Available Pets
The Riverside County Department of Animal Services is operating in critical overcrowding across our shelters, and we need your help to provide deserving pets a loving home. With more than 1,000 available pets on any given day, RCDAS maintains one of the most diverse selections of adoptable animals in the nation. Our four shelters house puppies, kittens, purebreds, seniors, mixed breeds, barn cats, rabbits, and reptiles waiting for homes. Adoption fees are as follows:
First 48 hours
Cats: Based on age
$65 8 weeks to 4 months
$45 5 months to 1 year
$25 all cats over 1 year
Dogs: $105
Other: Case-by-case—details provided in person
After the first 48 hours (two days) a pet is available for adoption have passed, all adoptions are free! Every adoption includes spay/neuter surgery, age-appropriate vaccinations, a microchip and an engraved ID tag.
If you are interested in adopting a puppy or kitten that is part of a litter, consider fostering the litter to get priority adoption. Additionally, adoption fees are waived for the first pet adopted by the foster. To learn more, visit our foster page.
How Adoption Works
Visit any of our four locations during open hours to meet available pets. When you find the right match, complete the adoption process during your visit. Most of our pets go home the same day they're adopted, so you’ll likely get to take your new pet home right away.
We recommend bringing immediate family members to meet your prospective pet. Our staff will provide guidance on successful pet introductions at home.
Pre-Adoption Process (DIBS!)
Animals completing their mandatory stray hold period (3-10 days) are available for pre-adoption through our DIBS! process. Complete the paperwork early, and if the original owner doesn't reclaim the pet, you will take the pet home the first day it’s available.
Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if multiple people want the same animal?
All adoptions follow a first-come, first-served policy. The first person in line has priority to meet and potentially adopt the animal.
What should I bring to adopt?
Bring valid photo identification (driver's license or state/country ID). If adopting that day, bring a leash for dogs or a carrier for cats and small animals.
What's included with adoption fees?
Every adopted pet is spayed or neutered and receives age-appropriate vaccinations, microchipping, and preventative treatments. Dogs also leave with a free engraved ID tag. These services are all included in your adoption fee.
How long does the adoption process take?
Most adoptions are completed within one hour. This includes meeting the pet, completing paperwork, and any brief behavioral consultation with our staff. On weekends and on days the shelters are busiest, the process can take a little longer.
Can I return a pet if it doesn't work out?
Yes. We accept returns within 30 days and offer behavioral support to help with common adjustment issues. Studies indicate that 92% of adopters who use post-adoption support services successfully integrate their new pets.
Do you have pets that are good with children?
We have pets that are great for almost every kind of home. When you come to one of our locations, our staff can help you meet pets that have already lived with children and those that are especially friendly at the shelter with kids. We can recommend pets based on your household composition, including homes with other pets and kids.
What if I rent my home?
We recommend confirming pet policies with your landlord before adopting. Many landlords approve pets when shown adoption documentation and vaccination records.
Do you offer senior or military discounts?
We periodically offer reduced adoption fees for qualifying adopters. Current promotions are posted at each location and on our website.
Can I meet a specific pet I saw online?
Animals move quickly through our system. While we can't guarantee specific animals will be available, our staff can help you find pets with similar characteristics and temperaments. If you see a pet you really want, it’s a good idea to come to the shelter the same day you see them online to have the best chance of adopting them.
Do you adopt to first-time pet owners?
Absolutely. Our staff provides guidance on pet care basics, and we offer post-adoption support resources, including training recommendations and behavioral consultation.
