Rehome Your Pet
While we are mandated to accept lost and stray animals, we are not required to take in owned pets, though we do so on a case-by-case basis based on our available capacity and the urgency of the situation.
RCDAS operates at or above capacity nearly every single day of the year. That means every kennel is full and we often have no room for incoming animals. Because of this, healthy, adoptable animals can become at risk of euthanasia if they get sick, develop stress-related behaviors, or simply because there is not enough space.
Though we do everything possible to save every adoptable animal, RCDAS takes in more than 35,000 animals each year and overcrowding can put otherwise healthy, adoptable pets at risk of euthanasia. You can check our current capacity. If we are above 100% capacity, we ask that you wait to relinquish your pet until the capacity goes down.
If you need to rehome your animal, we ask that you take the following steps first:
- Self-rehoming. List your pet on Rehome and Home-to-Home. These are rehoming platforms that can be used by anyone.
- Friends and family. List your pet on social media platforms and attempt to rehome to friends or family.
- Rescue groups. Contact rescue groups who may be able to help. Rescue groups can often take puppies, kittens, and purebred animals. There are many breed-specific rescues that are dedicated to helping rehome specific breeds.
If you are experiencing a housing or personal crisis and you are working with a case manager, social worker, or other human support agency, we may be able to provide temporary boarding for your pet. Please have your case manager/social worker contact [email protected].
