Pomeranian Dumped at Shelter in Jurupa Valley

April 21, 2020

A person abandoned an injured Pomeranian outside the county’s shelter in Jurupa Valley Tuesday morning (April 21). The shelter is calling him Lucky Sunshine because of his nice disposition.
Riverside County Animal Services is investigating the cruelty act. It is illegal in California to willfully abandon an animal – even when doing so outside an animal shelter, Commander Chris Mayer said.

The male Pomeranian is young and had recently suffered a fracture on his front right leg. State law also mandates that a pet owner must seek veterinary care if their pet is injured.

Dr. Luis Lizarraga, a staff veterinarian with Animal Services, examined and treated the dog and placed a cast on its injured leg.

Mayer is investigating shelter video surveillance and he will work with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department if the footage provides helpful information.

“It is illegal and inhumane to treat a dog in this manner,” Animal Services Director Julie Bank said. "We will continue to monitor his health and if no one comes to claim him we will be providing surgery for him on Friday,” Bank said.

If anyone knows anything about Lucky Sunshine, please call 951-358-7387. We are also looking for individuals who would be interested in fostering and donating to help dogs such as Lucky Sunshine, Bank said.
